Stephen joined Huws Gray Group in January 2024 as General Counsel and Company Secretary – the Group’s first in-house lawyer.   Stephen is responsible for providing legal oversight and ensuring strong governance across the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant.

He advises the Board on all aspects of legal compliance and risk management, as well as providing legal support to our operational businesses and our central operations teams (including HR, procurement, marketing and IT). Stephen is also responsible for the oversight of the Group’s extensive real estate portfolio.

Stephen is a qualified solicitor with over 25 years’ experience. Prior to joining Huws Gray, he held senior legal and compliance roles at Lookers plc, Marshall Motor Holdings plc, and Accident Exchange Group Plc.  Stephen qualified as a solicitor in 2000 with Eversheds Sutherland in Birmingham where he practised as a corporate lawyer for nearly 10 years.

Outside of work, Stephen is Chair of the Board of Trustees at Think Differently Education Trust, a special educational needs academy in Birmingham, reflecting his commitment to community and education. Stephen is also keen runner and, after 10 years of failed attempts, he finally managed to secure a place in (and complete!) the London Marathon in 2025.

Stephen is recognised for not only his legal expertise but also his commercial, pragmatic and down-to-earth approach with the ability to balance strategic oversight with operational detail.
