Founder and Director
Terry Owen co-founded Huws Gray in 1990, starting with one branch in Gaerwen, Anglesey. From those modest beginnings, he has overseen the company’s remarkable growth into a nationwide network, now recognised as the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant.
Terry has been central to shaping the Group’s vision and strategy. During his leadership, Huws Gray expanded to hundreds of locations across England, Scotland, and Wales. He played a pivotal role in major acquisitions, including the landmark purchase of the GB merchanting businesses from Grafton Group plc, which added approximately 200 branches and 3,500 colleagues to the Group.
Terry’s entrepreneurial drive and commitment to customer service have been the foundation of Huws Gray’s success. Terry is a strong advocate of people-led leadership, ensuring colleagues are given the tools, training, and support they need to succeed. He is deeply committed to supporting the Group’s 4,500 colleagues and their families, recognising that the strength of the business lies in its people. He has consistently championed investment in people, processes, and infrastructure, ensuring the business remains competitive while retaining its community-focused values. His leadership has also been key during investor partnerships, such as the minority stake acquired by Inflexion Private Equity in 2018, which supported further consolidation and growth.
Beyond business, Terry is deeply rooted in North Wales and values the role of Huws Gray as both an employer and a contributor to local communities. His vision has always been to combine national scale with local service, ensuring that customers receive the same trusted support whether visiting a single branch or engaging with the Group nationwide.
