Our story
Huws Gray was founded in 1990 with a single branch in Gaerwen, Anglesey. Founder and now Chairman, Terry Owen, was joined by his business partner and mentor, John Llewellyn, whose initial financial backing helped bring the vision to life.

Their guiding principle was straightforward: provide the best choice of quality building materials under one roof, supported by knowledgeable and helpful branch teams, delivering exceptional service while building strong, mutually beneficial relationships with customers.
In 1990, Dewi Morris joined the team, bringing a transformative vision to branch layouts to improve stock visibility and accessibility. This entrepreneurial spirit and ambition set the foundation for the business’s growth. Over the next 28 years, Huws Gray expanded through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions, applying its proven formula across a growing network of branches.
A major milestone came in 2018 with the acquisition of Ridgeons, a builder’s merchant with 26 branches, extending the company’s reach to North Wales, the North West, and East Anglia, bringing the total number of branches to 60. To support this growth, the business partnered with private equity firm Inflexion, which remained in place until 2021.

In 2021, Huws Gray announced the acquisition of the GMGB businesses from the Grafton Group, including Buildbase and specialist distribution businesses such as C&L, PDM, Frontline, Smiths Britten, NDI, Lloyd Worrall, and the Timber Group, with a combined turnover of £837.3M (full year 2020). This acquisition was the largest in the industry to date. Following a six-month regulatory review by the Competition and Markets Authority, the acquisition was completed on 31st December 2021, creating a nationwide network of 248 branches.
Supporting Huws Gray’s next phase of ambitious growth, Blackstone became the company’s private equity partner in June 2021. Alongside this, Daksh Gupta joined the Huws Gray Group as CEO in 2024, bringing extensive expertise in strategic growth and operational excellence to help lead the business through this exciting new chapter.
In 2025, Huws Gray Group unveiled its new brand identity, reflecting our evolution into a unified, full-service provider across the building materials and construction lifecycle. This rebrand represents more than a fresh look – it embodies our commitment to serving customers at every stage, from planning and design through to supply, installation, and ongoing support.
By bringing together our diverse businesses under a single, cohesive brand, we are creating a stronger, more connected group. Each company retains its specialist expertise, while benefiting from shared resources, integrated operations, and a unified vision. This approach enables us to deliver a seamless experience for our customers, combining the depth of specialist knowledge with the breadth of a nationwide network.
